Hello and welcome to the Nyama Sangha's Forum and Message Board! (We are Not Your Average Meditation Association!)
Our website may be found here. We regularly meet at Ekoji Buddhist Sangha of Richmond on Saturday mornings both in person and virtually. This board is a support to our sangha and not intended to take the place of real, face to face (or face to screen to face) interactions, although if this is the only way that you can be a part of our sangha, that's okay.
We have policies to ensure that this is a welcoming and helpful place. No one on staff is actually a professional at administering a discussion site, so please feel free to make suggestions and ask constructive questions. In the meantime, here is what we ask of you:
USERNAME
Please use your actual name so that you can be connected to the person that we know outside of this message board. Avatars/photos are not required, but might be helpful to others as we continue to get to know you.
MEMBERSHIP
Our group is informal and we are welcoming, but we would prefer to know who is here. Membership must be approved by one of the Admins, and we will try to make that quick. In the meantime you can read and review all of the material on the site. Once you are member you can engage in discussion with the rest of us.
Do invite your friends if this is helpful to them, but please remember that this site is intended only to augment our sangha rather than replace it. A good deal is lost when conversations are reduced to words on a screen, so we would like people here to at least have the intention of joining us in person or virtually from time to time.
COMMUNICATION
It is hard to imagine anyone that we know in Nyama might need this reminder, but to ensure that no one is surprised remember to practice Right Speech in your interactions here. The Buddha identified five characteristics of Right Speech:
1) It is spoken at the right time.
2) It is spoken in truth.
3) It is spoken affectionately.
4) It is spoken beneficially.
5) It is spoken with a mind of good-will.
In other words, please practice your communications here mindfully as you would in real life. If you become abusive (again, hard to imagine on this site) or inappropriate with your content, then your post will be removed and you will be warned. If you do it again, your membership will be revoked and we will need to discuss what to do about getting it back.
COMMERCIALISM
At this time, we don't have a policy on making commercial posts. In fact, we may look at using "affiliate links" to companies that we would like to support in order to help support Nyama and Ekoji financially. So use your best judgement if you would like to promote a product, service, or company that you have had positive experiences with. The best place to do so would probably be "General Discussion" rather than any focused discussion area.
Please reply to this post with any questions for clarification or thoughts on improvement to our policies. To prevent the thread from getting too long, we may delete your reply after deciding what to do with it our about it, and we'll try to make sure that we let you know what we decide and that we've seen your post. (We probably won't start doing that for a while, though!)
Thanks, and welcome!
